Checking your tyre sizes
It’s important to check your tyre sizes before you commit to buy tyres online. Whilst websites like Kwik Fit can give you a very accurate and close estimate as to which size your tyres might be, the only 100% accurate way it to check the existing tyres on your car. Especially as the wheels may have been changed after purchase or upgraded at the point of purchase, making the “standard” sizes wrong. To do this you simply need to look at the side wall of your tyres and you’ll see a series of numbers. E.g. right now you’re look at 205/55 R16 tyres for your Citroen C3.
This video helps to explain how to find your tyre size. (Please excuse the excessively excited man).
Tyre sizes explained
Tyres come in a huge range of shapes, sizes, styles and ratings. The information below should help you to better understand all of the letters, numbers and ratings that are on a tyre and also give you some key information to help you to decide the sort of tyre you might want to choose for your Citroen C3.
Let’s start by looking at your tyre size 205/55 R16, you’ll also notice on many tyres this is also followed by a letter e.g. V. So let’s look at each part of the size and explain what it means.
1. The first section of 3 digits is the cross section width. it’s how many millimetres there are from the inner sidewall to the outer.
2. Aspect ratio, or sometimes referred to as profile. This is the height of the sidewall. It is measured as a percentage of the width. The lower the number, the smaller the sidewall will be.
3. The type of construction. Nearly all tyres these days are “R” Radial tyres.
4. Size. The next two digits are the wheel rim size. e.g. 17, 18, 19 refer to the wheel rim inches.
5. We haven’t shown it, but you’ll sometimes then get another couple of numbers which relate to the load index of the tyre, most tyres will be made to take into consideration the style of car and typical loads, but if you’re concerned this number will be available to give you the load rating of the tyre.
6. And finally again we haven’t shown it, but when you come to choose a tyre you’ll most likely see a letter at the end of the size, this refers to the speed rating at which it is suitable for. For example V is a tyre that has been rated for 149mph.
Tyre Features
Aside from the size of the actual tyre there are a number of other markings that you’ll see on the level or product description on the website, the information below tells you all you need to know about these.
Fuel Efficiency
This rating goes from A to G and gives you an idea of the fuel efficiency of the tyre. The rating is based on the resistance that the tyre generates or “rolling resistance” to be specific. This is the force that is generated and working against the movement of the car therefore making the car work harder to cover a distance. The differences aren’t going to be huge between most of the 205/55 R16 Citroen C3 tyres, but the difference between an A and G rating is said to be around £100 a year for the average road user.
Wet Grip
If you’re in to your cars, and especially in to your racing, please don’t think of this symbol as meaning the tyre is a specific wet tyre compound. Instead this symbol is simply a rating of how well the tyre performed in a brake test on wet surface. You can read the information on this test and how it’s conducted on the government website. But as a quick summary, the best wet grip rating will provide a 30% shorter braking distance than the worst rating in the 50mph wet surface test.
Exterior Noise
Don’t be mislead into thinking this will give you an idea of how noisy the road will be in your Citroen C3. The rating actually measures the exterior noise generated by the tyre and is displayed in decibels. However it doesn’t of course take into account the car that the tyre is fitted to, which is why you can’t use it as a guide for how noisy it will be in your car, as some cars are much better insulated than others. That said, it does give you a good guide for comparing the different tyres available.
